On Sept. 20, 2016, Keith Lamont Scott, a 43-year-old black man, was sitting in his car when police officers arrived to serve a different man a warrant. According to the police officers, Scott exits his vehicle with a firearm and poses a threat. Officer Brently Vinson fatally shoots Scott, which sparks two nights of violent Black Lives Matter protests throughout Charlotte, North Carolina. The governor declares a state of emergency. Police officers, wearing riot gear, launch tear gas at protesters who had started throwing glass bottles, looting stores, destroying vehicles, and vandalizing a hotel, hurting its employees. Four police officers are also injured.
