  • AirAsia Flight Goes Missing (Dec. 28): A commercial jet, AirAsia Flight QZ8501, disappears in Indonesian airspace with 162 people onboard. According to officials at AirAsia, air traffic controllers lose contact with the aircraft at 7:24 a.m. Singapore time. The plane is flying from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore when it goes missing over the Java Sea. Before the plane loses contact, one of the pilots contacts air traffic control and asks to fly at a higher altitude due to bad weather. (Dec. 30): Indonesian government officials confirm that their rescue teams have found bodies and debris from Flight 8501. The debris is found approximately 66 miles from the plane's last known location.
