Description: A collection of three cine-essays from photographer-turned-filmmaker Agnes Varda. "Ydessa, The Bears, and Etc" records an exhibit of hundreds of early 20th century photographs (mostly German and American), each of which features a teddy bear. The curator/collector/bear aficionado is Ydessa Hendeles, a scarlet-haired sylph of a woman, who looks to be a figment of Edward Gorey's imagination. "Ulysses" analyzes an enigmatic photograph Varda took in 1954 in which a nude man stands on a pebble beach, a dead goat lies in the foreground and between them is a child named Ulysses. "Salut Les Cubains" animates 1,800 black-and-white photographs Varda took in Cuba, four years after the revolution. Through montage, she makes the subjects of the photos sing and dance, which she calls "Socialism and cha-cha-cha."
