The Presidential $1 Coin Act

Updated August 5, 2020 | Infoplease Staff

The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 calls for the minting of several new coins. Starting in 2007, four dollar coins will be issued per year, each bearing the image of a different president, in the order in which they served. The first four will be Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison. (These will not replace Sacagawea dollars, which will still be produced.)

The act also calls for a series of $10 gold bullion coins featuring the spouses of each president, also four per year. (In the case of presidents who didn't have a spouse while in office, a different design will be chosen.)

$50 gold bullion coins will be minted featuring the design used on the 1913 “Buffalo nickel.”

Finally, in 2009—the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln penny—there will be four new pennies. The portrait on the front will remain the same, but the back of each will have a design representing some aspect of Lincoln's life. Starting in 2010, the design on the back will be changed to “an image emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States of America as a single and united country.”
