The 2001 U.S. Team (the 2001 event was postponed one year due to safety concerns after the September attacks on America) players were chosen on the basis of points awarded for wins and top-10 finishes at official PGA events from Jan. 9, 2000 through Aug. 19, 2001. The top 10 finishers on the points list automatically qualified for the 12-member team, and U.S. Captain Curtis Strange selected the final two players.
The 2001 European Team players were chosen on the basis of points awarded from September 2000 to September 2001. Each player received one point for each euro won during this period in Ryder Cup ranking events. The top-10 in the standings after the final event automatically qualified for the 12-member team, and European Team captain Sam Torrance selected the final two players.
United States: Qualifiers—Mark Calcavecchia, Stewart Cink, David Duval, Jim Furyk, Scott Hoch, Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson, Hal Sutton, David Toms and Tiger Woods; Captain's selections—Paul Azinger and Scott Verplank.
Europe: Qualifiers—Thomas Bjorn (Denmark), Darren Clarke (Northern Ireland), Niclas Fasth (Sweden), Pierre Fulke (Sweden), Padraig Harrington (Ireland), Bernhard Langer (Germany), Paul McGinley (Ireland), Colin Montgomerie (Scotland), Phillip Price (Wales) and Lee Westwood (England); Captain's selections—Sergio Garcia (Spain) and Jesper Parnevik (Sweden).
