2002 Boston Marathon
The 106th edition of the Boston Marathon was held Monday, April 15, 2002 and run, as always, from Hopkinton through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton and Brookline to Boston, Mass. Kenyan policeman Rodgers Rop outdueled fellow countryman Christopher Cheboiboch to win the men's race in 2:09:02. It was sweet revenge for the Kenyans, whose string of ten consecutive Boston titles was broken in 2001 by South Korean Lee Bong-Ju.
In the women's division, Kenyan Margaret Okayo held off two-time defending champ Catherine Ndereba and broke the tape in a women's record, 2:20:43. The time shattered the previous mark (2:21:45) set in 1994 by German Uta Pippig.
In the men's wheelchair race, South Africa's Ernst VanDyk (1:23:19) successfully defended his 2001 crown, finishing a full two minutes and 45 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. In the women's division, 2001 runner-up Edith Hunkeler of Switzerland captured her first title with a time of 1:45:57. Winners in the men's and women's divisions earned $80,000. Winners of each wheelchair division earn $10,000.
