Became the first player in major league history to smack two grand slams in the same inning...hit both shots off Dodgers starter Chan Ho Park in the third inning of the Cardinals' 12-5 victory on April 23...his eight RBI in one inning also set a major league mark...they were the first two grand slams of his career.

New York Yankees
David Cone
Pitched the 16th perfect game in major league history in a 6-0 Yankees win over the Montreal Expos on July 18 at Yankee Stadium (for other perfect games, see page 122)...struck out 10 batters...performed the feat in front of Yankees' greats Don Larsen and Yogi Berra, on hand to celebrate their World Series gem in 1956.

San Diego Padres
Tony Gwynn
Became the 22nd member of the 3,000-hit club on Aug. 6 with a first-inning single off Montreal's Dan Smith in a 12-10 Padres win at Olympic Stadium...in typical Gwynn fashion, he stroked four hits in the night...it was his 2,284th game...only two players (Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie) have reached 3,000 in fewer games.
Wade Boggs
3,000 Hits
Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Wade Boggs
Blasted a sixth-inning home run to right field off Cleveland's Chris Haney in a 15-10 Indians win on Aug. 7 to become the 23rd member of the 3,000-hit club, just one night after Gwynn ...he was the first player ever to reach the mark with a home run...it was the 118th home run of his career.
