Wild Card Playoff Game

On October 4, 1999, the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds, each with a regular-season record of 96-66, staged a playoff game to determine the winner of the National League wild card spot. It was the tenth time in baseball history that an extra game was needed as a tie-breaker, and the second time in history that a tiebreaker was needed to determine the wild card winner (see p. 106 for details).

The game was played at Cinergy Field in Cincinnati due to a coin toss and the Mets went on to defeat the Reds 5-0 behind a two-hitter by pitcher Al Leiter to advance to the Division Series against Arizona.
