Texan who made cycling history as the first 6-time winner of the Tour de France (1999–2004) as member of the U.S. Postal Service team; announced retirement after seventh consecutive win in 2005; returned from treatment for testicular cancer to become the world’s top cyclist; only the 2nd American winner (Greg Lemond) in the race’s history.
