1999 Boston Marathon Winners

Updated September 27, 2017 | Infoplease Staff

The 103rd edition of the Boston Marathon was held Monday, April 19, 1999 and run, as always, from Hopkinton through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton and Brookline to Boston, Mass. Kenya's Joseph Chebet, race runner-up the previous two years, took the lead after the 22-mile mark and held on to record his first Boston win with a time of two hours, nine minutes and 52 seconds.

Ethiopia's Fatuma Roba ran the fourth fastest women's time (2:23:25) in Boston Marathon history to win her third consecutive race. Her time was four seconds off last year's pace. She joined Germany's Uta Pippig as the only women to win three consecutive Boston Marathons.

The highly-anticipated women's wheelchair race didn't disappoint as rivals Louise Sauvage and Jean Driscoll battled to the wire for the third consecutive year. And like the past two years, Sauvage (1:42:23) emerged victorious. Switzerland's Franz Nietlispach (1:21:36) took the men's wheelchair division for the fourth time in the last five years. Winners in the men's and women's divisions earned $80,000. Distance: 26.2 miles.
