Co-National Champions Michigan and Nebraska each captured a share of the national championship. The Wolverines were ranked first in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll entering the bowl season, however, while they retained their top spot in the writers'
poll following their 21-16 Rose Bowl win over #8 Washington St., the coaches dropped them a notch to number two in their poll. Nebraska was able to sway enough voters with its 42-17 Orange Bowl win over #3 Tennessee, to earn a share of the national title. Opponents'
