1997 Major League Baseball Milestones

58 Big Flies
Mark McGwire
Fell short of Roger Maris' fabled mark of 61 home runs in a season but did club 58 to tie the mark for right-handers set by Jimmie Foxx in 1932 and matched by Hank Greenburg in 1938...became the first hitter since Babe Ruth in 1927-28 to hit 50 homers in two consecutive seasons.
Triple Crown
Roger Clemens
Became the first pitcher since Dwight Gooden of the 1985 New York Mets to win the pitching “triple crown,” leading the AL in ERA (2.05), wins (21) and strikeouts (292, a personal career high)...was the seventh AL pitcher to accomplish the feat and the first since Detroit's Hal Newhouser in 1945.
Without E's
Charles Johnson
Became the only NL starting catcher in history to play the entire season without committing an error...played 124 errorless games behind the plate for the Marlins in 1997, extending his regular-season streak to 171 games...Buddy Rosar went errorless for the AL Philadelphia Athletics in 117 games in 1946.
No DP's
Craig Biggio
Played all 162 games for Houston without hitting into a double play...broke the previous major league mark for games played with no double plays (154) set in 1935 by Augie Galan of the Chicago Cubs...Detroit Tigers infielder Dick McAuliffe has the AL mark with 151 games in 1968.
