world heavyweight champion from 1926-28; beat 31-year-old champ Jack Dempsey in unanimous 10 round decision in 1926; beat him again in famous “long count” rematch in '27; quit while still champion in 1928 with 65-1-1 record and 47 KOs. Died: Nov. 7, 1978
