led Minnesota Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and ‘91; retired in 1996 due to an eye ailment with a batting title (1989), 2,304 hits and a .318 career average in 12 seasons; six-time Gold Glove winner; elected to Hall of Fame in 2001; died of complications after a stroke. Died: March 6, 2006
