Steven Page and Ed Robertson established the band in 1998. They claim the band's name is meant to suggest youthful naivete and is not at all sexist. Tyler Steward and Jim Creeggan joined next, and a fifth member, Andrew Creeggan, was replaced in 1995 by Kevin Hearn. In 1990, the Ladies released a successful independent EP, “Be My Yoko Ono,” and their debut album, Gordon, was a hit in Canada in 1992. Two more albums followed, Maybe You Should Drive (1994) and Born on a Pirate Ship (1996), the latter helped by the group's appearance on the TV show Beverly Hills 90210. They were the subject of Jason Priestley's rockumentary, Barenaked in America. 2000 saw the release of Maroon, produced by Don Was. In 2001 they won three Juno Awards, best group, best album (Maroon) and best pop album (Maroon).
