Son of the Bride| Director: | Juan Jose Campanella | | Writer: | Juan Jose Campanella, Fernando Castets | | Sony Pictures Classic; R; 124 minutes | | Release: | 4/02 | | Cast: | Ricardo Darin, Hector Alterio, Norma Aleandro |
Unlike the other nominees for the 2001 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, Son of the Bride has a determined everydayness about it. Filmed in Buenos Aires, the movie centers around Rafael (Ricardo Darin), a fortysomething restaurateur pressed by mid-life crisis. Rafael's mother has Alzheimer's, his young girlfriend wants commitment, a corporation wants his restaurant, and a sudden heart attack demands that he rethink his relation to all this. Son of the Bride possesses a gentle, familiar realism. By keeping tight scope on its characters' lives, the film allows them to emerge in strong focus. Light sentimentality and occasional humor smooth the realistically rough edges of this well-told story.
