soulful British singer whose hits included '60s songs “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Wishin' and Hopin'.” She was honored by Queen Elizabeth II in Dec. 1998 and was scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame eleven days after her death.
