Charlie Byrd

virtuoso jazz guitarist widely credited with bringing Latin America's bossa nova to the United States. His collaboration with saxophonist Stan Getz, 1963's Jazz Samba, shot up to No. 1 on the pop charts and fueled a brief period of bossa nova mania. A classically trained guitarist, Byrd fused classical with jazz and recorded more than 20 albums.

Died: Annapolis, Md., 12/1/1999
