Showtime, a movie that shares its name with a cable channel, is best suited for broadcast on one. The half-parody buddy-cop flick stars Robert De Niro and Eddie Murphy. It's no surprise who plays the gruff veteran and the flashy upstart. Showtime's microgenred twist is that Mitch (De Niro) and Trey (Murphy) get paired together in a cop reality show run by ruthless producer Chase Renzi (Rene Russo).

The movie contains very few surprises, but it manages to slip in some decent gags. Cranky nonverbal Mitch, for example, can't act to save his life. Not even lessons from William Shatner help. And Officer Trey would just as soon be a TV star. Showtime's main problem, however, is that it harkens back to many other movies without contributing a fresh perspective of its own.
