film producer and director whose socially aware films covered such topics as race, juvenile delinquency, and Nazi war crimes and earned him the title “message filmmaker.” He remains one of Hollywood's most respected auteurs. His credits include The Defiant Ones (1958), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967).
