record producer who started the first independent jazz label, Commodore Records, and ran the Commodore Music Shop, one of New York City's most respected jazz record stores. He recorded jazz greats Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald. In 1954 he produced “Rock Around the Clock.” Died: 7/20/2001
