Jorge Amado Novelist Born: 8/10/1912 Birthplace: Itabuna, Bahia, Brasil
Brazilian novelist whose political and comic novels have been translated into 50 languages. A former communist, Amado lampooned Brazil's politicians, and as a result spent time in prison and exile. His books include Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon (1958) and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1966). Both were made into films starring Sonia Braga. Died: Salvador, Brazil, 8/6/2001
