Although the central question in sci-fi thriller The Imposter is whether or not Spencer Olham (Gary Sinise) is a nice human or an malevolent alien robot implanted with Spencer's memories and a bomb, the real puzzler is how so many good actors got cornered into a bad film. Sinise, Madeleine Stowe, Tony Shalhoub, and Vincent D'Onofrio are all here. It's hard to see why. A relentless cop (D'Onofrio) trying to protect 2079 Earth from Alpha Centurian beings accuses Olham of evil-robothood and the chase is on. Olham falls from respectability into fugitive status, he befriends a rebel, and seeks help from his wife (Stowe), running from the cops all the while. Like Bladerunner, The Imposter is based on a Phillip K. Dick story. Its philosophical overtones and poorly lit vision of the future stand in the shadow of that much better movie.
