Lantana is a taut character study that lures in the viewer with its dark thriller sheen. Set in Sydney, Lantana follows several middle-aged couples defined by the raw spaces between their public embraces and hidden intersections. There is a murder, and a handful of spouses are—or may be—betraying the other, but what makes Lantana excellent is the way in which powerful performances bring an oddly disquieting script to life. Lantana began its life onstage, and the layers of psychological complexity seen here contain a vivid, memorable quality.
