Cibo Matto

Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto
rock band

Made up of two Japanese-born musicians, Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori, the hip band Cibo Matto, which means “food madness” in Italian, fuses funk, rap, bossa nova, swing, and hip-hop. The delirious lyrics, which are often looped or scratched, are delivered in French and broken English. The songs are usually about food and love, or some combination of the two. Keyboardist/sampler Honda arrived in New York in 1987 and vocalist Hatori in 1993. They formed the band in New York City in 1994. Their albums include Viva! La Woman! and Stereo*Type A. Cibo Matto disbanded in 2001.
