The 2000 Charlie's Angels is more of a cut-n-paste pastiche than a remake. The film incorporates elements from the original TV serial, Hong Kong action flicks, and Mission: Impossible-style high-tech intrigue. Cameron Diaz's Angel is like the Farrelly Brothers' Mary equipped with blackbelt skills. In an exoticized rut, Lucy Liu's paid to play the same kinky dominatrix she does on Ally McBeal.

Strong women (Diaz, Liu, and Drew Barrymore) in skimpy clothes beat up on the bad guys, with plenty of jokes thrown in along the way. but the film shifts gears at a messy rate. Consistently unbelievable fight choreography (think of a cluttered Matrix) and underwritten dialogue hold thin plot strands together. The proven combination of flesh and action, however, should ensure general success.
