Return to Me
The feel-good earnestness of Return to Me is perfectly exemplified in its basic plot. The filmmakers have taken a common metaphor way too literally: a lonely widowed architect (David Duchovny) falls in love with the waitress (Minnie Driver) who has received his dead wife's heart in a lifesaving transplant. Return to Me presents their romantic life with all the gritty details vacuumed and swept away. The result is often heartless. Sugar-voiced oldies croon as Duchovny and Driver clamber (smiling, always smiling) to rise above TV-level human interaction. They do this reasonably well, with a particularly entertaining beginning. Fox Mulder is replaced with a hearty (albeit equally one-sided) character, and Driver's cheeky warmth shines through as well. Information Please® Database, © 2007 Pearson Education, Inc.
