The West Wing dominates the Emmy Awards, winning a record nine trophies. West Wing wins include Best Drama, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director. Will & Grace triumphs in the Best Comedy category, and earns supporting actor nods for Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally. The Sopranos, which was nominated for 18 awards, was nearly shut out. The F.T.C. releases a report that condemns the entertainment industry for “pervasive and aggressive marketing” of best-selling restricted movies, music, and video games to children as young as age 12.

James Gandolfini signs on for two more years as the rotund star of HBO's The Sopranos, and he'll make $10 million a year. Not bad for a show with a season of only 13 episodes.

Variety reports that Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are teaming up on the upcoming film Into the Setting Sun. Scorsese will direct and Spielberg will produce the epic about the construction of the first intercontinental railroad.

Barbara Walters extends her contract with ABCNews and will receive a reported $12 million a year for the next five years for her journalistic services. The hefty salary makes her the highest-paid broadcast journalist in history.
Mel Gibson announces plans to direct Robert Downey Jr. in a Los Angeles stage production of Hamlet. Performances are set to begin in January.

Wunderkinds Matt Damon and Ben Affleck debut a screenwriting contest at www.projectgreenlight.com. The Oscar-winning actors/writers will produce the winning script, and the writer will direct the film, with $1 million in backing from Miramax.

Hollywood film studio executives defend their products on Capitol Hill and offer up a 12-point plan to curb the marketing of violent media to children. The meeting was in response to the recent F.T.C. report that condemned the entertainment industry for some of its marketing practices.
