For the first time in a dozen years, ABC wins the February sweeps. An average of 15.7 million viewers tuned in to the alphabet network each night. The network's dominance is largely attributed to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which airs several times each week.

Dr. Laura Schlessinger, controversial radio-show host, apologizes for her defamatory statements against gays, though she stops well short of supporting homosexual lifestyles. She has called homosexuals a “biological error” and “sexual deviants,” and referred to gay men as “predatory on young boys.” Schlessinger, who passes herself off as a radio shrink, has a doctorate in physiology, not psychology.

Stephen King's 66-page novella Riding the Bullet is available exclusively in electronic only as an "e-book." For $2.50 readers can download the book onto computers or personal organizers. The software prevents users from printing or copying the manuscript. More than 500,000 copies were downloaded in the first three days the book was available.

Steven Spielberg confirms that he's on-board to direct A.I. — artificial intelligence—the unfinished project of the late Stanley Kubrick. Details on the plot are scant, but the film is said to revolve around robots who are able to think and form independent thought. The film is slated for a summer 2001 release.

Willie Fulgear, a 61-year-old Los Angeles resident, finds 52 of the 55 missing Oscar statues in a dumpster behind a Food-4-Less store. He'll take home the $50,000 reward offered by Roadway Express, and he also gets an invite to the Oscar ceremony.
Madonna confirms she's expecting a child with 31-year-old British film director Guy Ritchie. Ritchie and Madonna have been together for about two years. It's her second child; she had daughter with her former personal trainer, Carlos Leon.

The Wall Street Journal publishes the results of its poll of voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that administers the Oscars. The poll has American Beauty winning Best Picture, Denzel Washington taking Best Actor, and Hilary Swank earning the Best Actress nod. The Journal managed to persuade 356 of the 5,067 members to reveal who they voted for.

Election takes Best Feature, Director, and Screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards. Boys Don't Cry's Hilary Swank and Chloë Sevigny win Best Actress and Supporting Actress, respectively. The Straight Story's Richard Farnsworth earns Best Actor honors. The Blair Witch Project wins Best First Feature, and Steve Zahn takes the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Happy, Texas.
Wild Wild West sweeps the 20th Razzie Awards, which honors the worst of Hollywood. The Western takes Worst Picture of the Year, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Song, and Worst New Screen Couple for Kevin Kline and Will Smith. Madonna and Sylvester Stallone are dubbed the worst actor and actress of the 20th century.

The mishaps leading up to the 72nd Annual Academy Awards end up being more thrilling and unpredictable than the actual ceremony. The night brought few surprises, with virtually all the favorites landing gold statues. American Beauty takes Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay.
