Tina Turner

Twenty Four Seven

  • Virgin

By this point, it seems as if the Diva thing has been done to death. But the exception to all the hype and hoopla is Tina Turner, who was, is, and always will be the real deal. The seemingly ageless soul songbird slipped away from her home base of Switzerland in the summer of '99 to record this sturdy set of dance-flavored R&B. For the irresistible lead single, "When The Heartache Is Over," she enlisted the help of the team that produced Cher's mega-smash comeback "Believe." They've turned the trick again for "Heartache,'' which Turner showcased at the Super Bowl. The rest of the album is a bit on the over-produced side, but the songs and the singer are consistently engaging. Of particular note is the heartache ballad "Don't Leave Me This Way," the smoldering smooth groove of "Falling," the mystical "Go Ahead," and the convincing kickoff track "Whatever You Need."
