The Closer You Get
The mythic American small town is perhaps too outdated for U.S. film audiences; it currently seems prudent to displace quaint community skits onto Ireland, where Americans assume that homegrown simplicity is not outdated. Restaging a bygone era requires traditional themes that would make Norman Rockwell proud: men seeking women, women seeking men.
The Closer You Get seems like Fox Searchlight's attempt to replicate the box-office earnings of all their other cheery Irish town films. In this one, village men place in ad for wives in the Miami Herald. Village women retaliate by inviting Spanish men to perform (music). Romance arrives when the men begin to realize that perhaps these local women are perfect after all.
