Isn't She Great

Director:Andrew Bergman
Writer:Paul Rudnick
Universal Pictures; R; 90 minutes
Cast:Bette Midler, Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce

The life of Valley of the Dolls novelist Jacqueline Susann embodied the druggy, trashy allure of her books. Bette Midler brings hearty personality to the role in this celebrity bio, but doesn't quite manage to capture the sleek and shallow seductiveness of the source. Isn't She Great is decent, campy, and light, but may disappoint those comparing it to the Valley book series or Russ Meyer's luridly successful film versions.
