Bicentennial Man
Based on an Isaac Asimov short-story, Bicentennial Man is a futuristic vehicle for Robin Williams' oversweetened humanitarianism. In the year 2005, a happy nuclear family purchases Andrew the robot (Williams). The nameless patriarch Sir (Sam Neill) notices creativity in his hunk of metal and starts to treat Andrew as a son. Centuries pass. Andrew, who fell in love with Sir's daughter, falls in love with her granddaughter (Embeth Davidtz) and decides that he must become human. Kindly Doctor Burns (Oliver Platt) helps in this regard. Now that we've landed in the new millennium, canned hammy futures seem staler than ever.
