Brokedown Palace

Director:Jonathan Kaplan
Writer:David Arata
Fox 2000 Pictures; PG-13; 100 minutes
Release:8/99
Cast:Claire Danes, Kate Beckinsale, Bill Pullman

The rumors are true: two American girls vacationing in Bangkok befriended a handsome Australian and accepted the offer to spend a few days in Hong Kong with him. At the airport they got busted for carrying kilos of concealed heroin — which they had absolutely no knowledge of. Days later the teens begin their 33 year sentence in the notoriously ruthless Thai prison system.Brokedown Palace is the name of the jail and the movie, which stars Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale. The Accused director Jonathan Kaplan follows the best friends' relationship as harrowing experiences with authority and punishment test the limits of their abilities to trust and sacrifice. Along the way they enlist the help of a sleazy Yankee lawyer (Bill Pullman) to fight the results of their own American arrogance.

Quite similar to last year's Return To Paradise, Brokedown Palace wrestles with an aura of seriousness — sometimes winning, sometimes losing. The unexpected ending unfolds a fresh new layer, making Brokedown Palace a worthwhile, overlooked film.
