Warner Bros.; 100 minutes; R
Release:7/99
Cast:Saffron Burrows, Thomas Jane, LL Cool J, Samuel L. Jackson

In Deep Blue Sea Saffron Burrows plays the requisite evil scientist who tampers with nature, mingling human brains with mako shark gray matter to create a trio of enhanced monsters who act more or less like Jaws, except for the fact that they can now reflect on the moral, philosophical, social, and economic implications of chomping humans to death with their giant, razor-sharp teeth.

The crew of scientists, random sharkbait, the cook (LL Cool J) and the investor (Samuel L. Jackson) have been stranded by a tropical storm that unleashed the sharks. They're trying to escape rising water in their WWII era compound without being eaten. The movie does what it sets out to do: provide major-motion picture summer shockfest entertainment. Hip-hop superstar LL Cool J plays a comic Bible-quoting cook who flips (not necessarily intentionally) racial stereotypes as he struggles to escape supercharged killer sharks.
