Ron SexsmithWhereabouts Ever since his magnificent, self-titled 1995 debut — an album which seems to sound better every year — Ron Sexsmith's no frills approach to style and songs has proved to be a breath of fresh air. The Canadian songwriter's latest is another superb and understated affair, from the warm beauty of the album-opening “Still Time,” and his death and dying saga “In a Flash,” right up through the Southern-styled charm of “Every Passing Day” near the end of the disc. Sexsmith does branch out a bit musically here, including elements such as a string section in “Riverbed” and New Orleans' flavored brass in “One Grey Morning.” But much like Paul Simon, his greatest gift is his ability to clearly and directly articulate some of the small wonders of everyday life.
