Top-notch screenwriter Towne (Shampoo, Chinatown) brings to life the tragic tale of Olympic runner Steve Prefontaine (Crudup, looking eerily like the real “Pre”). There's a nail-biting recreation of the champ's 1972 race and plenty of fine acting, especially Crudup's impassioned portrayal of a man hungry to win at all costs and Sutherland as his crusty coach.
