These days, a film about a flawed, swell-headed politician doesn't exactly count as escapism. Still, Beatty helms a daring, droll portrait of a senator who loses it on the campaign trail, takes out a contract on himself, and figuring he has nothing to lose, begins telling nothing but the truth - often to the rhythms of rap. This maniacally energetic, highly personal effort (Beatty co-wrote, produced and directed the film, too) is a landslide winner.
