Lloyd Nolan

Lloyd Nolan was most famous for his role as the curmudgeonly Doctor Morton Chegley in the Diahann Carroll situation comedy Julia (1968–71). Nolan spent much of his career acting in “B” movies, usually playing police detectives or gangsters in such films as King of Gamblers (1937), Michael Shayne, Private Detective (1940), and Buy Me That Town (1941). He received critical approval for his acting in supporting roles in big budget movies, such as The House on 92nd Street (1945), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945), and The Hatful of Rain (1957). Nolan earned further critical acclaim with his portrayal of Captain Queeg in the Broadway and television productions of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial during the mid-1950s, which earned him the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Actor and a Best-Actor Emmy. His final film appearance came in the Woody Allen film Hannah and Her Sisters (1986).
