The 24–Hour Woman| Director: | Nancy Savoca | | Writers: | Nancy Savoca and Richard Guay | | Artisan Entertainment; R; 95 minutes | | Release: | 1/99 | | Cast: | Rosie Perez, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Patti LuPone, Karen Duffy, Diego Serrano and Wendell Pierce |
This clunky comedy sees director Nancy Savoca take on the predicament of women forced to juggle a job with the full-time position of motherhood. Inadequate maternity policies in the workplace and deadbeat dads are serious issues that The 24-Hour Woman displaces with chintzy satire. To her credit, Rosie Perez brings irrepressible buoyancy to her role as a television producer jilted into manic overtime after having a child. That Grace discovers how to balance both aspects of her life after an on-air breakdown is meant to offer hope, but instead broadcasts a gloomily mixed message to all mothers working outside the dreamspace of daytime TV.
