In this remake of John Cassavettes' 1980 original, Sharon Stone turns in a mature, multi-faceted performance as a woman caught between criminality and maternity. Stone's Gloria is an ex-con “broad” (her term) whose world is rearranged around the possibility of becoming mother to Nicky (Figueroa), a young Puerto Rican whose family was murdered at the behest of her gangster ex-boyfriend. Young Figueroa steps up to the dramatic task. Gangland suspense set against the cinematic background of Manhattan further enhances the story.
