With such album titles as Smells Like Children (1995) and Antichrist Superstar (1996), with stage outfits and makeup that call to mind David Bowie and Alice Cooper, with Dr. Antoh Szandor LaVey, founder of the church of Satan, bestowing the title of Reverend on him, Marilyn Manson has become one of the most controversial performers around. Manson first gained widespread notice with the album Smells Like Children (1995), which included his cover of the Eurythmics' “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”. “Sweet Dreams” received significant airplay on MTV. Denounced by the likes of former “Drug Czar” William Bennett, several outlets refused to sell Manson's latest disc Mechanical Animal (1998).
