Each night, Ed McMahon would introduce Johnny Carson with a, rolling “Heeeeeeeeere's Johnny!,” and he was so supportive in his role as Johnny's sidekick that he became known as “the human laughtrack.” McMahon's more than 30-year tenure on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson inspired comedic impersonations that banked on his recognizable personality. McMahon also hosted the long-running syndicated talent show Star Search. A highly sought-after pitchman, he has performed in commercials, endorsing a range of products from dog food to beer to the Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. In addition, he has appeared in the situation comedy The Tom Show (1997–98), and in several films, including Fun With Dick and Jane (1976) and Butterfly (1981).
