Squirrel Nut Zippers

popular swing band

Formed in 1993 in Efland, North Carolina, Squirrel Nut Zippers has been at the forefront of swing music's return to popularity in the late 1990s. Their albums include The Inevitable (1995), Sold Out (1997), Hot (1997), Perennial Favorites (1998), and Christmas Caravan (1998). Band members Katherine Whalen, vocals; vocalist, guitarist, and trombone player James Mathus; vocalist, guitarist, and saxophonist Ken Mosher; percussionist Chris Phillips; vocalist, guitarist, saxophonist, and clarinetist Tom Maxwell; bass player Stewart Cole; fiddle player Andrew Bird; and trumpet player Je Windenhouse combine a big band sound with a sense of whimsy that recalls the music of Cab Calloway and Louis Jordan.
