Janeane Garofalo's urbane Fed stuck in cowboy country steals the show in this sly spoof of contemporary Tarantino-style film noir. The caustic FBI agent is investigating a series of slice-and-dice killings. Joaquin Phoenix plays Clay, a not-as-naive-as-he-looks cowboy who becomes the No. 1 suspect, though his affable sidekick, Lester (Vaughn), has a dark side and his jealous former lover (Cates) has already murdered one of his one-night stands.
