Duvall once again proves himself one of Hollywood's most cherished talents. The writer, director and star of this quiet yet powerful drama, Duvall should have won Oscar gold for his efforts. It's the sometimes careening tale of a fire and brimstone preacher, Sonny, whose piety doesn't stop him from smacking his wife and hightailing it out of town. Still determined to spout the word of God, he sets up an exuberant church in a backwater bayou town but can't escape his past. One of 1997's best.
