It's the Dalai Lama vs. Chairman Mao in Scorsese's sprawling tribute to the history of Tibet. With its kaleidoscopic cinematography, the film is a visual marvel, a meditation on pacificism and spiritual unity. While some of its grandeur fades on the small screen, the effort nonetheless stands as a thought-provoking and well-acted achievement in the director's oeuvre.
