The film that launched a hundred Matt 'n' Ben cover stories, plus nabbed Oscars for the photogenic pals (Screenwriting) and their costar Williams (Best Supporting Actor). A decidedly schmaltzy turn by Van Sant, it's the story of Will Hunting, a street-toughened South Boston math genius who must choose between his intellectual gifts and his chain-wearing, R-dropping homeboys. Yes, Williams is in his sweatered, bearded mode, and the plot gets a little treacly, but Damon and Affleck's crackling onscreen charisma lifts their script above its overt sentimentality.
