A Broadway stage actor, he entered films in 1939 and starred opposite Rita Hayworth in Gilda (1946). His other films include Young Man With Ideas (1952), The Big Heat (1953), The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956), Cimarron (1960), The Courtship of Eddie's Father (1963), Battle of the Midway (1976), and Raw Nerve (1991). He won a Golden Globe for his performance in A Pocketful of Miracles (1962), and appeared in several telefilms throughout the '70s, including Evening in Byzantium (1978) and The Sacketts (1979). Died: 8/30/2006
