Leon Forrest writer, educator Born: 1937 Birthplace: Chicago
Widely considered one of the most important African-American writers of his generation, he produced novels and essays and taught English and African-American studies for 24 years at Northwestern University. His novels include There is a Tree More Ancient Than Eden (1973) and Divine Days (1992). Died: 11/6/1997
